New Delhi, The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, will pay a three-day visit to South Korea beginning on Saturday to strengthen strategic partnership and economic cooperation. Following the bilateral visit to South Korea, Dr. Singh will attend the second Nuclear Security Summit scheduled to take place in Seoul on March 26 and 27. Interacting with the media here today, Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai pointed out that the main objective of the Nuclear Security Summit process has been high-level attention on the global threat posed by nuclear terrorism and the measures that are required to prevent terrorists and other non-state actors from gaining access to sensitive nuclear materials and technologies. "While nuclear security is a national resposibility there is scope for international cooperation. The IAEA has a central role in strengthening the international nuclear security framework," said Mathai. "The Seoul Summit is intended to take stock of progress in implementation of the Communiqué and Work Plan of the Washington Summit as well as agree on new measures that would be reflected in the Summit Communiqué. New Delhi, Former Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi, who was shown the exit door by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) after he invited the wrath of his party chief Mamata Banerjee over the increase in fares in the railway budget, on Wednesday stated he stood by his party's decision on his resignation. "The basic reason why I resigned was because my party wanted me to quit. Since I have no attachment to the position and Mamata Banerjee wanted me to resign, I put in my papers," said Trivedi. Trivedi, who resigned on Sunday, had, however, been lauded by the Prime Minister, Cabinet colleagues and industry for his bold budget, in which he announced an increase in train passenger fares, the first in nine years. "I was quite confident that the Prime Minster would never ask for my resignation. It was decided that Prime Minister never wanted this to happen as he had no reason for it," he added. Trivedi had, however, in an interview to a leading news channel on Tuesday said the decision to sack him was a pre-planned decision taken by the Trinamool Congress, and had nothing to do with the fare hike. New Delhi, Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy was on Tuesday elevated to cabinet rank to take over as railway minister replacing Dinesh Trivedi, who was forced to resign after Congress caved in to Mamata Banerjee's pressure. Widely expected to roll back at least the lower class passenger fare hike proposed by Trivedi in the Railway Budget, Roy, 57, was sworn in as cabinet minister at a special but brief ceremony by President Pratibha Patil at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. He was currently serving as Union minister of state for shipping and had earlier served as minister of state in the railway ministry before Trivedi took over last July. The ceremony was attended by vice president Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the UPA chairperson and cabinet ministers including ministers of Trinamool Congress. Trivedi was forced out by Trinamool Congress after he incurred the wrath of party chief and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee who was opposed to his proposal to increase fares in the railway budget last Wednesday. New Delhi, After winning its first battle in the Lok Sabha, the UPA government secured a victory in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday on the issue of the fiercely contested National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC). The amendments moved by the BJP and the Left to the President's address against the anti-counter terror unit were defeated in the Upper House. The amendments could garner only 82 votes in favour, while 105 members opposed it. The BJP staged a walkout after the vote, expressing unhappiness with the Prime Minister's reply on the issue. Trinamool Congress MPs were absent during the voting, while SP and BSP members voted in favour of the government. On Monday, three amendment motions moved by the opposition on the anti-terror intelligence hub were defeated in the Lok Sabha. The Trinamool Congress, a bitter critic of the NCTC but part of the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA), lent tacit support to the government in defeating the amendments after its MPs walked out of the house and didn't participate in the voting.
